While the incidence of HIV has been declining among youth in South Africa, knowledge levels on HIV and safe sexual and reproductive health practices has been declining. The same population is also increasingly connected (using or owning a mobile phone). UNICEF South Africa commissioned HealthEnabled to investigate current digital health initiatives targeting sexual and reproductive health among youth and identify opportunities to better engage with that population, providing information and resources that promote healthy behaviors.

UNICEF South Africa

Activities

  • Reviewed the health system implications of a previous UNICEF initiative
  • Assessed and identified opportunities for digital tools to be used to support HIV prevention and treatment of children, adolescents and neonates

Results

  • Helped create a better understanding of the opportunities and gaps for using digital health to support youth HIV prevention and treatment in South Africa
  • Developed an implementation plan for a ‘real-time’ mother-baby pair tracking system
  • Generated recommendations on digital health solutions for adolescents to obtain sexual and reproductive health information and advice
